Drinking Buddies is an exception, as most movies substitute other drinks for alcohol during drinking scenes. The independent comedy, which was directed by Joe Swanberg and starred Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick, and Jake Johnson, was actually filmed while real beer was being sipped. As a result, Wilde and Kendrick frequently indulged in alcohol.
On DirecTV’s Off Camera with Sam Jones, the actress asserted that booze was never scarce because the 2013 movie was filmed in a genuine brewery.
In an interview with People, Wilde claimed, “We were hammered the entire movie because it was real beer, because alcohol on that set was cheaper than water, because we were shooting in a brewery.
The actress also recalled how she made the mistake of failing to tell Anna Kendrick that the beer given on stage was actual beer. Her co-star, she claimed, “took a massive drink of beer, not thinking it was real, and was like instantly hammered” as she sat down to film the opening scene.
“She asked, “What’s going on? What are you two up to? and we said, “Oh, we forgot to tell you—the beer’s all real, and everyone’s wasted.” It’s 10am. Greetings from Drinking Buddies.
In the movie, which mainly relies on improvised language, coworkers Luke (Johnson) and Kate (Wilde) spend entirely too much time flirting with each other even though they both have significant others. Anna Kendrick made the decision to join the project about two weeks into production. Revolution Brewery in Chicago was the location for the production.
Kendrick has also acknowledged that he struggles with drinking on the job. “They gave me fake beer during a scene at the bar, but they gave me real drink during a scene where I’m playing cards with Jake, and I wasn’t aware of it! In an interview with Vulture, Kendrick said, “I didn’t aware it was genuine until halfway through the take, so every time I lost, I was pounding beer.
“I was like, ‘I’m very intoxicated right now,'” she continued. I had to let everyone know that I had been drinking at work as soon as the take was done. The thought of becoming the next troublemaker star who got drunk and started acting out frightened me.
